2024 European Game Sales Strong Despite Fewer AAA Releases

In spite of the fact that there were less AAA video games launched in comparison to the previous year, European game sales continued to be high during the first half of 2024.

This information comes from GSD data that was provided by GI.biz. The data indicates that only little less than 80 million video games for personal computers and consoles were sold in Europe during the first half of the year 2024.

The first half of 2023 saw the release of notable titles such as Hogwarts Legacy, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Diablo IV, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. This represents a reduction of 1.6% in terms of unit sales, which is a remarkable performance considering the fact that the same period of time saw the release of these important titles.

In comparison, only two new games have managed to make it into the top ten sales chart in the year 2024. These games are Helldivers 2 (which is ranked second) and The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered (which is ranked tenth).

It is possible that the market is experiencing a more severe decline in terms of income. This is due to the fact that many of this year’s best sellers have more affordable selling prices. According to GI, profits from video games in the United Kingdom fell by thirty percent over the first half of the year.

GSD is able to track physical sales in all of the major European regions; but, it does not include digital sales from certain businesses, such as Nintendo. This is an important point to keep in mind. There is also a lack of data for Palworld, which was one of the most popular games of the year.

The European market for console hardware has experienced a decline of 24%, with 2.2 million units being sold despite the decline. PS5 has had a decline of 16%, Switch has experienced a decline of 32%, and Xbox Series S and X have experienced a decline of 37%. This is probably because the Switch platform is getting older and the release slate is getting weaker.
