COLOMBO – Responding to a recent spike in dengue fever cases, the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) has unveiled a comprehensive five-day mosquito control initiative spanning six provinces.
The targeted program encompasses the Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern, and Eastern provinces. Dr. Nalin Ariyaratne, Director of the NDUC, highlighted the surge in dengue cases with the onset of the inter-monsoon season, prompting swift action.
Before the official launch of the program, a thorough two-day entomology survey will be conducted in the identified provinces. This survey aims to assess mosquito breeding sites and the distribution of mosquito species. The gathered data will play a crucial role in strategically deploying control measures, including larviciding, fogging, and community outreach initiatives.
As of today, Sri Lanka has reported a troubling 82,036 cases of dengue fever, resulting in 49 deaths in 2023 alone. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the NDUC emphasizes the significance of preventive measures at both individual and community levels.

Public Awareness for Dengue Prevention:
Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, manifests through symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and vomiting. Individuals experiencing these symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
Preventative Measures Include:
1. Mosquito Bite Prevention: Apply insect repellent containing DEET. Wear long sleeves and pants, particularly during peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk).
2. Mosquito Habitat Elimination: Remove stagnant water sources around homes, known breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
3. Community Clean-Up Drives: Regularly eliminate potential breeding sites, including discarded tires and containers.
The coordinated efforts of the NDCU and public cooperation are critical in effectively curbing the dengue surge and ensuring the well-being of the communities across the six provinces.
