A distressing shooting incident unfolded at the main campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), resulting in at least three casualties before the assailant met his demise, according to authorities.
The Las Vegas Police Department confirmed through a social media statement that three individuals, excluding the shooter, lost their lives, while one person who sustained gunshot wounds remains in critical condition. The victims’ identities have not yet been disclosed, and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s demise—whether by police or suicide—remain unclear.
Vincent Perez, a UNLV professor, recounted hearing multiple gunshots and seeking refuge on campus. “I would say just seven, eight shots, one after another, loud and very loud,” he shared. “As soon as we heard that, we ran back inside, and we realized this is a real shooting, and there’s an active shooter on campus.””I would agree that only seven, eight shots, in a steady progression, noisy and extremely boisterous,” he shared. “When that’s what we heard, we ran back inside, and we understood this is a genuine shooting, and there’s a functioning shooter nearby.”

Law enforcement swiftly responded to reports of an active shooter, engaging with the suspect. University police spokesperson Adam Garcia confirmed the suspect’s demise, stating, “The suspect is deceased.” Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department assured the community that there was no lingering threat, but as a precaution, the main UNLV campus and its branches were temporarily closed.
A thorough search of campus buildings is underway to ensure the absence of additional victims or potential threats. Initial reports mentioned gunfire around Beam Hall, housing the business school, and another report of shots near the Student Union.
The UNLV campus, situated close to the Las Vegas Strip, has an enrollment of approximately 25,000 undergraduates and 8,000 post-graduates and doctoral candidates. The impact on students appears profound, reminiscent of the aftermath of the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas, emphasizing the need for support in the wake of such tragic events.
