Pakistan PM urges developed countries to lead climate action at COP28

At the ongoing COP28 conference in Dubai, Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar issued a strong call to developed countries to step up their efforts to tackle climate change.

In his national statement, Kakar stressed the need for developed nations to take the lead in fulfilling their historic responsibility and increasing global mitigation ambitions. He urged them to provide adequate financial and technical assistance to developing countries so that they can effectively deal with the climate crisis.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of allocating at least half of climate finance to adaptation measures and highlighted the urgent need to build resilience in vulnerable communities. He also called for the immediate implementation of the $100 billion climate finance pledges made by developed countries.

Emphasizing the high expectations from COP28, Kakar hoped that the conference would produce concrete actions rather than mere promises. He stressed the importance of providing developing countries with adequate means of implementation, including climate finance, capacity building, and technology transfer.

Kakar highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to combat climate change, citing the country’s growing ambitions reflected in its revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), which aims to achieve a climate change target by 2030. Emissions are to be reduced by 60% overall. He also highlighted a comprehensive national development. Launch of the Adaptation Plan and the Living Industries Initiative, which demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to environmental protection.

The Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan’s recent initiatives at COP26 and COP28, emphasizing the country’s leadership in advocating for a global damage and loss fund. He emphasized the importance of climate justice and the need for developed countries to provide adequate, predictable, and grant-based climate finance to developing countries.

On the sidelines of COP28, Kakar held bilateral meetings with heads of state of various countries, discussing the environmental challenges facing Pakistan and exploring ways of cooperation.
